National Dog Month +

August 26th: National Dog Day

This list of 400 children’s books about man’s best friend and the fur babies that love us unconditionally is one of my most favorite lists I have ever made. It’s so special because we lost both of our dogs earlier this year and there are so many stories that remind us of how much we loved them and their unforgettable qualities. This list includes educational and entertaining stories about dogs as pets, service dogs, different dog breeds + resources for teaching kids about dogs crossing over the rainbow bridge.

These stories range from player biographies to educational stories that teach the game. I have also included a bunch of our favorite Ohio State children’s books!

Moreover, many of these stories share the hard work that goes into running the farms that feed us and even entertain us.. from apple orchards and vegetable farms to petting farms and ranches. Without agricultural laborers and their contributions to our worldwide food supply, where would we be? Be sure to thank a farmer for what they do!

August 7th: National Lighthouse Day

This list of books is a newer one that I just recently put together. There are so many beautifully illustrated stories that give a nostalgic east coast feel that brings me back to vacationing in The Outer Banks growing up. One year we got to witness the moving of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. It took 23 days to move the lighthouse 2,900 feet in the summer of 1999 in efforts to protect it from erosion on the shoreline. Ever since I’ve had a fondness for the beauty and history of lighthouses! Moreover, my in-laws live on Saint Simons Island so we get to experience their local lighthouse with the kids when we visit and the kids have also become fond of lighthouses!

National Lighthouse Day is celebrated annually on August 7th to commemorate the signing of the 1789 Act for the Establishment and Support of Lighthouses, Beacons, Buoys, and Public Piers. It honors the maritime heritage of these structures and the keepers who maintained them. The United States has approximately 700 lighthouses, with about 150 still active. Because the day falls during prime summer travel season, local museums and historical societies host various events, such as guided tours, educational exhibits, and family-friendly activities.
