Christmastime is full of distinct scents that bring back memories and make your home feel cozy.
One of my favorite holiday memories is when my parents would make homemade wassail in the slow cooker. It would simmer all day and I remember falling in love with the cinnamon scent that lingered about the house. Though the wassail was edible (and delicious), it also served as a homemade potpourri that represented the holidays in our home.
This weekend I took that concept and created a stovetop potpourri of my own to give our home the aroma of Christmas. I am so excited to share it with you all!
Don’t get me wrong, I love my seasonal candles and still use them habitually, but there is something so satisfying and cozy about creating your own holiday scents. This can even become a simple and fun activity to make tradition of each year.
Personally, I will have this simmering on the stovetop during the day since I work from home, but this is the perfect thing to throw together to make your guests feel warm and welcomed when the come over for holiday festivities.
Can you say “Hostess with the Mostess”?!
Here is what you will need:
- 2 cups fresh cranberries
- 1 orange (sliced)
- 2 whole cinnamon sticks + 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon whole cloves
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 small piece of fresh ginger (grated)
- 1 ½ cup apple cider
- 2 small fir branches (I cut mine right off of my Christmas tree)
- Water
Here is how to make it:
- Grate ginger then set aside.
- Slice orange then set aside.
- Add all ingredients (except for the water) into a medium pot.
- Once all ingredients have been added, fill the pot with water until it is ¾ of the way full.
- Set the pot on the stove and bring to a low boil. Then reduce to a simmer.
- Let simmer for about 4 hours. Let cool overnight and simmer again the next day. (Be sure to add more water when reusing)
My favorite Kate Spade Pot that I am using here is currently out of stock, but I have linked a similar one here!
Enjoy!
What is your favorite Christmas scent? I plan to try out a few others this holiday season and would love to hear your suggestions!

I always love when people post these types of things, but for some reason I’ve never actually tried one! I think this holiday season I finally will give stovetop potpurri a go.

Definitely give it a try. It is a lot easier than you think and so, so fragrant!
I hope to post more scents soon 🙂
